2014 – 2015 Discussion Groups

hand-discussion-groups

One of the unique components of HAND’s capacity building sessions are our discussion groups, which create cross-learning environments for professionals working in the same field to share ideas, lessons learned and opportunities specific to their job. To further enhance this approach to learning and sharing, HAND will also host experts who are knowledgeable in these fields to make presentations to the groups on topics relevant to their profession.

During the 2014 – 2015 training season, HAND will convene the Asset Management, CFO, Resident Services and Green Building discussion groups. If you serve in these positions and would like to be engaged in one of the discussion groups, please email Heather Raspberry so you can be added to the distribution list. Also, feel free to share ideas for discussion group topics and presenters.

Please note, detailed descriptions and registration information will follow as content is developed. This ensures that each session will include timely topics and expert presenters. Many thanks to HAND’s 2014 – 2015 Sponsors, who offset the costs of HAND’s capacity building sessions. Discussion groups are free to current HAND members. For individuals who are not members of HAND, registration fees for each session are $45 or you can take advantage of our low-cost dues, and join the organization to receive one of the many member benefits: Free training for you and your staff!

Resident Services Discussion Group – Connecting Resident Services to Research Based Outcomes

Date:
January 27, 2014
4:00 – 6:30 PM

Location:
Crawford Edgewood Terrace
635 Edgewood Street NE
Washington, DC 20017

Do you work in a job focused on resident services? Come learn from your peers at CPDC during HAND’s next Resident Services Discussion Group. In 2011, CPDC transitioned its resident services from direct service delivery to partner provided services within five impact areas: Health & Wellness, Resident Engagement, Environment, Education, and Economic Development. In 2013, the work further evolved to deeper engagement with residents as the stewards of their communities to support the desire to build trust with and among residents and to engage more residents in creating a better quality of life. As a result, the One Edgewood Network was born with the ultimate goals of removing barriers, building trust, and enhancing residents’ quality of life. The discussion group will begin at 4 PM with a dialogue with HAND members sharing their experiences connecting resident services to research based outcomes. At 5:30 PM, attendees are invited to stick around and observe CPDC’s Network Night, a monthly event where resident services staff come together with residents, property management and security come together for fun, network building, and co-creating over a warm meal and to actively participate in Community Share and Table Topics, two unique yet critical aspects of Network Night. Don’t miss your opportunity to learn first hand from your peers strategies they are using to engage and create meaningful experiences for residents. Dinner will be served.

APRIL  2015

Resident Services Discussion Group Hosts Trusted Space Partners

Date:
April 14, 2015
Noon – 2 PM

Location:
AHC, Inc.
2335 11th Street North
Arlington, VA 22201

Are you charged with wearing the resident services hat in your organization, but feel like you are also wearing the same hat as a teacher, minister or even a therapist? Resident services staff are often challenged by how to spark real change in a person’s life, while working within the limited framework of a specific affordable housing community.  You have limited contact with the people you serve and the contact you do have is often coupled with painful aspects of life, like paying rent or getting repairs completed or continuing to qualify for housing subsidy.  Your one big advantage is that you – as front line staff – inhabit the same daily environment with residents.  If this sounds like you, join HAND at its next Resident Services Discussion Group on for a conversation with Frankie Blackburn and Bill Traynor of Trusted Space Partners. Frankie and Bill will share with us their  experiences integrating the Trusted Space philosophy in affordable housing communities across the country and the positive shifts they have witnessed to the operating culture.

About Trusted Space:
Trusted Space Partners believes that most people make improvements in their lives and their communities when they are supported by and working alongside neighbors and friends, and not because of a specific program or project. Trusted Space Hypothesis:  If we (staff and residents) create intentional spaces, practices and a network of mutual exchange and collaborative action, we can shift the operating culture of isolation and fear to a culture of connection, aspiration and innovation.  And, if this shift in operating culture takes root, over time, we will provide fertile ground for an exponential number of positive outcomes for residents, far surpassing the incremental improvements that occur in a programmatic framework. Lunch will be served. Many thanks to AHC, Inc. for hosting us!

This session is free to current HAND members; Non-Member Fee: $45
