Standard Communities, Housing on Merit, Mayor Muriel Bowser Celebrate Renovation and Preservation of Fort Chaplin Park Apartments
Standard Communities and Housing on Merit were joined by Mayor Muriel Bowser, Councilmember Vincent C. Gray, and NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green in celebrating the successful renovation and preservation as affordable housing of Fort Chaplin Park Apartments, a 549-unit property located on East Capitol Street NE in Washington, D.C on May 15th. The Ribbon Cutting ceremony was attended by residents, community groups, and project participants including lenders, investors, and representatives from a diverse array of federal and local government agencies, all of whom helped contribute to the successful revitalization of Fort Chaplin Park Apartments.
Recognized with the 2019 Tax Credit Excellence Award by the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition, Standard Communities’ work at Fort Chaplin Park Apartments included expanding affordability protections to 100% of residents – an improvement of nearly 30% – and completing a $33 million renovation of the property that included upgrading unit interiors, modernizing building systems, and adding a 5,000 square foot, LEED-certified Community Center that offers extensive amenity and recreational space. No residents were displaced from the property during the renovation.
Standard worked in partnership with Housing on Merit to design and implement an extensive suite of resident services and community programming at the property. The newly-built Community Center serves as a hub of activity for residents of all ages, with a focus on academic excellence, health and wellness, employment and financial stability, and growth and empowerment. Congrats to all team members involved in the project!
